STAFF ATTORNEY POSITION

LSE has a fulltime Staff Attorney position open.  Applicants must be living or planning to live in central Maine.  The Staff Attorney could work remotely from a home office, from an LSE office located in Augusta, or under a hybrid arrangement.  The Staff Attorney will handle a wide variety of civil litigation matters and conduct outreach in central Maine.  

Candidates must be licensed to practice in Maine (or be eligible for admission or sitting for the bar exam in July) and have 0-5 years of related legal experience.  Candidates must also have a strong interest in and/or experience doing civil litigation and a commitment to working with and helping older people.   The Staff Attorney will work as part of a team of Staff Attorneys and receive ongoing professional training and support.

HELPLINE ATTORNEY POSITION

PART-TIME

LSE is a statewide non-profit organization that has been providing free legal services to older Mainers for forty eight years.  LSE is committed to ensuring that all older people in Maine – of any class, race, sex, background, orientation, or identity -- are secure in meeting their basic needs, including housing, health care, nutrition, community, safety, and freedom from exploitation and oppression.  As part of that commitment, LSE works to create and maintain a workforce and culture that reflects the diversity of our state.   

The Helpline offers legal information, advice and referrals to older people exclusively via telephone in a wide variety of substantive civil legal areas, including health care, housing and debt collection.  This position can be fully remote or the person can work from an LSE office located in Augusta.   The Attorney will work fifteen to twenty-five hours per week.  The Attorney will work in a team that includes other attorneys, a paralegal who screens all first calls for help, and a supervising attorney.  LSE’s regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00. 

The successful candidate must have strong organizational skills and a proven ability to provide exceptional client service.   Training will be provided in any unfamiliar areas of the law.  This is a very rewarding position that offers someone the chance to make a real difference in the lives of older Mainers.

FINANCE ASSOCIATE POSITION

This fulltime position can be structured as hybrid or working from an office located in Augusta. Part-time employment may also be an option.  The Associate will work as a part of a team that includes a Finance Manager, Bookkeeper and Office Manager.  Training and support will be provided in areas that are new or unfamiliar.  This is an outstanding opportunity for a finance professional to expand their skills in a nonprofit setting.   The duties of the Finance Associate position may include:

  • Support the Finance Manager with all finance and budget-related matters. 
  • Preparation of bi-weekly payroll. Generate reports, prepare journal entries and post as needed.
  • Full cycle of accounts receivable functions including monthly billing and timely payment reconciliations. Generate reports as needed.
  • Full cycle of accounts payable functions from invoice entry to payment with accuracy in program expense allocation and supporting documents as well as preparation of annual 1099 filings.
  • Assist Finance Manager with month end close activities including journal entries, account and bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Provide support to Finance Manager for benefit administration functions with open enrollments, new hires and departing employees, and annual filings.
  • Assist Finance Manager with annual financial audit and tax document preparation and reconciliations as needed.
  • Assist Finance Manager with insurance and vendor renewals.
  • Serve as backup to other designated finance staff.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or combination of education and experience normally represented by an Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Two or more years’ experience working in a finance department, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Proficient with QuickBooks and Excel.
  • Familiarity with payroll processing.
